Tools

  • jewelry pliers
  • jewelry clippers
  • round nose pliers

Materials

  • natural leather cord
  • gold spacer bars
  • gold headpins
  • mix of semi-precious stones
  • mix of gold plated brass beads

Time

30 minutes
Nebi-1 Pin-it%402x

In addition to the materials in the kit, you'll need a set of jewelry tools.

Nebi-2 Pin-it%402x

Take one gold headpin and with your chain nose pliers bend a 90 degree angle about 10mm below the flat head.

Nebi-3 Pin-it%402x

Now with your round nose pliers start to bend a circle. Pull the end all the way around, your chain nose pliers will help with this, until you have a fully formed loop right at the top of the angle you just bent. The loop you are making should have at least a 1.5mm opening. Our loop here is about 2mm.

Nebi-4 Pin-it%402x

Take your clippers and snip off any part of the wire that goes past the bend. You don't want to snip too much or you'll end up with a gap. What you want is a tight loop with no gaps.

Nebi-5 Pin-it%402x

Repeat loop on all 5 headpins.

Nebi-6 Pin-it%402x

Thread a headpin through the top hole of one spacer bar.

Nebi-7 Pin-it%402x

Holding the headpin against the bar, start threading on your beads. Our first row consists of 3 gold donut beads and 1 tigers eye bead. You can follow along with our guide or make up your own configuration. Just make sure to keep every bead configuration at about 3/4" long or you will run out of beads before you reach the final steps. Thread on the other spacer bar at the end.

Nebi-8 Pin-it%402x

Make sure all your beads are close together and bend the wire at a 90 degree angle in the SAME direction as the loop. This is important because you want your loops to be in the same direction when you are done.

Nebi-9 Pin-it%402x

Take your round nose pliers and form a loop with the same size opening as you did before.

Nebi-10 Pin-it%402x

Snip off any excess wire past the bend and make sure your loop is formed where there is no gap. The loops should be facing the same direction. If they are slightly off you can try turning them carefully with your chain nose pliers.

Nebi-11 Pin-it%402x

Thread another headpin through the next hole down on your spacer bar. Start adding more beads. We used 3 amazonite beads for this row. Thread the headpin through the other side of the spacer bar. Repeat the banding and looping as we just did above.

Nebi-12 Pin-it%402x

For the next bars we added these beads to make our necklace base. You might have one or two leftover beads depending on your configuration.

Nebi-13 Pin-it%402x

With one end of your leather cord thread it down through one side of the loops.

Nebi-14 Pin-it%402x

Tie a knot at the very end. We only needed one knot to keep it from sliding back through the holes but if your holes are slightly larger you might want to make 2 knots here.

Nebi-15 Pin-it%402x

Repeat on the other side to form your necklace. Before you tie this second knot you might want to slip it over your head and make sure it's a the length you want. You can always cut off a little leather to make it shorter. Just make sure it's long enough to fit over your head.

Nebi-16 Pin-it%402x

Wear it alone or mixed with your other carefree jewelry!

This actually wasn't as hard as I thought, but it looks like it was really difficult! I used the leftover beads (two amazonite and one donut bead) on the lavender-dyed silk thread I had left from last month to make a new bracelet! I took a jump ring and lobster clasp off an old necklace.

this is my first subscription box (and I'm so excited I want to make everything right now!!) but I do not have the jewelry tools. Do you guys sell a set of tools? (you definitely should!) if not, what do you recommend? Thank you!!

This project was a little more time consuming than most, but the results are worth it! So cute!

Just made this one. This was fun to put together. After putting together some previous FTM projects that use headpin loops like these (like the Golden Trellis Earrings), I had no trouble with this. Will wear this quite often!

I messed this up by cutting the head pins too short- I don't suppose you could send me some more?

Love it! I snipped the opposite side and added slip knots so I could adjust the length, but still get my head through it. Turned out adorable!

Had some trouble making the circles on the second end of the pinheads, but it turned out great! This is SUCH a cool necklace!

This was turning out so well... until I managed to accidentally snip off one of the loops on the last pinhead. Blast! Too bad you can't buy one pinhead :(

Aargh! I have such trouble with the pinhood loops, mine are all crazy and lopsided. I was so focused on working on those that I cut two of the headpins in the wrong place! Can you please send me two more? Thanks!

I took a while, but I got the hang of balancing the pins and the ladders and the stones. Cute!

I must have bad luck, I feel bad you guys have to keep sending me replacements but I just ordered another Toketee collection (because I loved it so much the first time!) but this time I only got half of a broken turquoise tube bead for the Nebi latter necklace :(
