Sumi Clutch

Our marble obsession has us drooling over Rachael Comey's marbled laptop clutch.  To make one of our own, we adapted our La Pouchette pattern for an iPad, and swapped out leather for vinyl, and marbled paper.

Tools & Materials

  • 2' x 2' of vinyl
  • 2' x 2' marbled paper
  • 2 sheets of wool felt
  • 2 screw studs
  • 1 spike colar stud
  • mod podge, foam brush, scissors, ruler, plate, water, paper towels, windex, heavy books
  • x-acto (optional), cutting mat (optional), leather punch (optional), bone folder (optional)

Begin by cutting your marbled paper and felt to form a template.  Our measurements are for a standard iPad.

  • 1 rectangle the size of your ipad, 7 1/4" x 9 3/4" with paper and
  • 1 with felt
  • 2 rectangles the height and 1/2 the length of your iPad,  4 7/8" x 7 1/4" with paper and
  • 2 with felt
  • 2 isosceles triangles with the longest side equal the length of your iPad and over 1/2 of the height.  9 3/4" x 6 5/8" x 6 5/8" with paper

1/ Lay out your sheet of vinyl on a flat surface. Spritz with windex and wipe clean any smudges.

2/ Place your cut paper over the vinyl to form the template give 1/4" of space between each seam, it should look like an unfolded envelope.  Make a mental note of where to place your center rectangle onto the vinyl and then clear all of your paper off.

3/ Squeeze a good amount of glue onto a plate.  Mix in a few drops of water to thin it out a bit. With your foam brush, apply a thin layer all over the marbled face of your largest rectangle. Carefully place it glue side down in the center of your vinyl.

4/ Glide a bone folder across the back of the paper to smooth out bubbles and adhere the paper to the vinyl.  Wipe away any excess glue and then flip it over to see the marbled side through the vinyl.  Make sure there are no air bubbles and smooth with the bone folder if necessary.  Flip back over and weigh down with a heavy book for at least 5 minutes.

5/ Remove the books from your vinyl and apply glue to the marbled face of one of your smaller rectangles.  Place it 1/4" away from the edge of your large rectangle and repeat the previous step.

6/ Repeat for the remaining small rectangle and then your top and bottom triangle.  Refer to our photos for orientation and be sure to allow 1/4" of room in between each piece of marbles paper creating a vinyl border around the center rectangle.

7/ Line your 3 rectangles by gluing down the corresponding felt pieces and weigh down with books as it dries.  Clean up any glue that may have squeezed out of the edges. With a ruler, cutting mat and x-acto, carefully cut along the perimeter of your template, just outside of the paper. This can also be done with scissors.

8/ When completely dry, check to make sure the envelope folds around your device and weight it down under a book with the flaps folded in.

9/ measure 2" in and 1" up from the bottom corner of your envelope and punch a hole through the side and bottom flap for your stud. Repeat on the other side and insert and screw in your studs.  Find the center of the clutch where the top and bottom points overlap and punch a hole through these two flaps.  Insert and screw in your spike stud through just the bottom flap.  Slide your iPad in, press the top flap over the stud and voila!

You're ready to turn heads and win at your next interview!
