Time
1 hourGather your tools and materials. Make sure to print out the template listed in the tools section above.
There are several different shapes that you can choose for the piñata. We'll be showing you how to make the triangle one. Cut out the template for the shape you'd like to create.
Cut the box open by making a slit on all four corners of the box, front and back.
Line the shapes up and start tracing the amount shown on them. In this case we will be making 3 rectangles and 2 triangles. You can use the flaps of the box for space too and fit this on one side of the box and make a second piñata if you'd like. There will be plenty of tissue paper left over! Also if you have a stockpile of old boxes this might be a good use for them;)
Cut out all the shapes along the drawn lines.
At the top right of the chosen template is a diagram of how the shapes will fit together. Lay them out just like the diagram and we'll start taping them together!
Using tape, attach the side panels to the center triangle.
Fold up the sides and use tape on the inside or outside to connect them all together.
In the center of one rectangle, punch a small hole with a hole punch or your pen/pencil. Cut a length of twine and form a loop that you'll use to hang the piñata once it's done. Tie a knot inside that will hold the weight of the piñata.
These piñata are pretty sturdy and more decorative than functional but if you'd like to add a few surprises inside now would be the time! Add in hand cut confetti, your favorite wrapped candy or small tokens.
Tape the top triangle shut.
Fold the length of your tissue paper in half several times until the width is about 2" wide.
Cut the length in half and set one half aside.
Using your ruler mark a straight edge along one side of the tissue paper, about 1/4" to 1/2" from the edge. Hold the opposite side taut and cut the paper along the marked line creating one straight open side.
With the straight cut-edge facing you, start cutting straight lines equal distance apart along the length of the tissue paper. Leave about 3/4" uncut at the top.
Once you've fringed the entire length of tissue paper cut the top fold off, leaving strips of fringe.
Repeat fringing with the lemon tissue paper and gold mylar. The mylar is a little trickier to cut and is best done in smaller sections. Mylar is not very easy to fold and strips are easier cut out individually by hand.
We are going to fringe one triangle and the top rectangle in peach. Feel free to mix up your colors or mix all three colors together on all sides! Open the glue stick and apply a line of glue to the bottom corner of the triangle. Place a small piece of tissue paper on top of the glue.
Apply another line of glue and layer another piece of tissue paper over the first one.
Work your way to the top with tissue paper, covering the entire triangle.
Trim the excess tissue paper from the sides.
You have one side done! Onto the next...
Repeat fringing the other triangle with lemon tissue paper. Trim the edges.
Apply the gold mylar just the same as the tissue paper.
Trim all the edges.
You now have the cutest little piñata. Make a couple more and have a party!
