Zodiac Rhinestone Ornaments
We combined a couple of our favorite things here and created some drop dead gorgeous ornaments to spruce up your home. Map out the zodiac constellations in crystal rhinestones. Tie on some delicate silk cord and these make a perfect gift made by you or as a kit. This DIY kit makes 30-40 ornaments!
- wax paper
- rolling pin
- round cookie cutters
- baking dish or sheet
- oven bake clay
- point-back rhinestones
- silk cord
- brass tubes or slim straw
- zodiac template
Gather your tools and materials. In addition to what is in the kit you will need a baking dish or sheet, wax paper and a pair of scissors.
Open the clay and start rolling it around in your hand. This will warm it up and make it easier to work with. Lay out a piece of wax paper and push the clay down on the paper with your palm, creating a thick circle.
Start rolling it out with the pin. Turn the paper around as you go so the clay rolls out evenly. You can even flip the clay a couple times to make sure it is getting even pressure.
Stop rollin once the clay reaches about 3/16".
Use the round cookie cutters to cut out circles close together in the clay. Pick up the excess clay. You can set this aside and roll it out again for another round of cutting.
Using the brass tubes, cut holes at the edge of the circles. Leave at least 2mm around the edge.
You can free hand the rhinestone placement or follow along with our template to mark out the constellations on each round. Pick up the stone and rest it gently on the clay until you've got the right position then using your toothpick push it down gently just until the widest part of the stone sits just below the clay.
To place the larger rhinestones repeat the process above. Push down on the rhinestone with your finger just until the widest part sits just below the clay.
Peel each one off the wax paper gently and lay them into a baking dish. Bake at 275 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool before moving onto the next step.
Cut a piece of silk cord 7" long. Thread it through the hole and pull the ornament to the center of the cord.
Tie an overhand knot close to the end of the cord and trim if needed.
Adding cord to all the ornaments and get ready for some serious admirers of your handiwork! Happy holidays!
